Double fun! John Sloane’s weekly painting shares this day with another special event — National Black Cat Day. To celebrate both, today John shares ‘Amish Autumn’, the first of his many paintings featuring these elegant classic felines. Many ancient cultures revered black cats as symbols of good fortune and blessing. However, in other countries over many centuries, black cats (and even their owners) endured much suffering and hardship. Even today, in modern ‘enlightened’ times, black cats are still considered unlucky for no good reason, and viewed with suspicion. Sadly, a black shelter cat is least likely to be adopted.
Celebrate National Black Cat Day by showing extra love and appreciation to your favorite cat (black, or any color). Also, re-consider your personal superstitions and biases. Challenge your beliefs and think outside the box ... you’ll be glad you did! Have a great week!
